Experience

Won a rare acquittal in a market manipulation prosecution in federal court: Alex was a key member of the trial team in U.S. v. Robert Bogucki (N.D. Cal.), which the Global Investigations Review recognized as the “Most Important Case of the Year.” Alex’s client, Robert Bogucki, was accused of engaging in a $6 billion fraudulent scheme “front-running” scheme to manipulate the foreign exchange options market. Alex helped win a full acquittal for her client from the presiding judge under Rule 29 (at the close of the government’s case, before the case was left to the jury) by persuading the court that no reasonable juror could find her client guilty.

Won a $26M verdict in a historic federal civil rights lawsuit: Alex was one of the lead associates in Sines v. Kessler, a lawsuit brought on behalf of ten plaintiffs against dozens of neo-Nazis and white supremacists who conspired to commit racially-motivated violence in Charlottesville, Virginia in August 2017. After a four-week jury trial, during which Alex presented testimony from multiple plaintiffs, Alex helped win a $26 million judgment. The case was covered extensively in the news and featured in the Emmy-nominated HBO documentary “No Accident.”

Successfully obtained a significant settlement under the False Claims Act on behalf of a whistleblower: Alex represented a researcher who discovered that the head of his department at an educational institution was grossly misusing federal research grant funds. Alex filed a lawsuit, prompting the Department of Justice to intervene, resulting in a substantial settlement with the educational institution and her client’s department head.

Won dismissal of murder charge against victim of domestic violence: Alex was part of the pro bono legal team that helped obtain a dismissal for Tracy McCarter, a nurse who was wrongfully charged with her husband’s murder. After extensive investigation and advocacy, Alex helped persuade the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office that Ms. McCarter acted in self-defense on the night of her husband’s death and that the charges against her should be dismissed.
